“I didn’t say anything profound. But I looked at them, and I meant what I said. That helped.”

“It felt… strangely peaceful. Like I was holding a still moment for two people who were stepping into something big. I think that’s what I liked.”

等他讲完,才反应过来继续提问:“So… you end up doing it more often?”

Ethan

“Somehow, word got around. A few months later, another friend asked me to officiate. Then a cousin. Then someone I barely knew from grad school.”

“There’s something intimate about being asked to officiate a wedding. You’re not just narrating vows. You’re witnessing people choose each other. Publicly. And you’re… temporarily stepping into their story.”

“It reminds me that even though psychology tries to explain love, it can’t fully contain it. Commitment isn’t just a rational decision. It’s… also a kind of leap.”

“Have you ever officiated a student’s wedding?”

“No. I was invited once, but I said no.” (“没有。

“I think… it felt too close. Not emotionally, but structurally. The classroom has a power dynamic, even if we try to pretend it doesn’t. And I didn’t want to carry that into someone’s wedding.”

“Also… marriage is already complicated. You don’t want to start it with someone on stage who once graded your finals.”

“I guess… part of me just wants to keep certain roles separate. So that when I do stand up there, it’s only about them—not about anything else.”

“Thank you for sharing all this,” 她轻声说,语气比开始时更加平稳,也更真诚。

“Thank you for asking,” Ethan
